BRAHMS AND SEDGWICK/PLUMMER/GERE

BRAHMS: Symphony No. 1, Eric Stumacher, conductor

SEDGWICK/PLUMMR/GERE: Music by Dan Sedgwick; text by Marji Gere & Tamara Plummer. The creative team also serves as performing ensemble: Gere on violin, Sedgwick on piano, and Plummer as dramatic reader. The libretto deals with an 1890’s-era Alabama lady cyclist who experiences and transcends racial and sexual exploitation. Damning journalism (pulled verbatim from the Sept. 15, 1895 edition of the L.A. Herald) is interwoven with the voice of the victim, brought to life by the poets’ and composer’s imaginations.
